Seven women wade out into the flowing waters of the Svartån River. They are headed towards an unknown destination. Humans are believed to have crossed the strait between Africa and the Arabian Peninsula 60,000 years ago. The author Lasse Berg writes about them in his Kalahari trilogy – seven women who brave the dark waters with wonder and curiosity and discover new horizons. They never returned, but became the foremothers of all of us now living beyond African soil.

Ekenger & Segerfelt were inspired by Berg’s tale and bring it into our time. The artists direct our attention to the refugee women who risk their lives in dangerous vessels on their way to what they hope will be a safer life. These women become the origin of future Europeans and Swedes.
